HELLHOLES
(written 2025 / recorded 2026)

(This is based on newspaper articles about Regina Martínez Pérez and safe havens for criminals)

Regina was
the bravest journalist and
she was always hot on their trails

down-and-dirty
drug clans and brutal soldiers
corrupt and vile politicians

fiscal accounts
from which funds disappeared and
all those victims of corrupt cops

of soldiers and
of cartel killers, now they
are all buried in shallow graves

she was told not
to sleuth yet she was brave and
in the end did pay with her life

so many were
perturbed and craved to kill her
one night the perpetrator came

he came over
came over the veranda
cracked the door open to her house

forty-eight years,
just four foot and eleven
weighing one hundred and ten pounds

she resisted
and she did grab a knife but
she just did not have a chance

her jaw was crushed
with brass knuckles and then she
was strangled with a bathroom mat

so many hellholes in this world
underbelly of society
sordid side of life and growing
cancer of our civilisation

we're eager to forget about
we're trying to forget about
we prefer to ignore
we do choose to ignore

the ones who fight the hellholes

in paradise
revived from desert, between
some illuminated palm trees

criminals find
safe haven in those countries
countries that will not extradite

money laundered
corrupt, discreet, protective
and all those crimes will go unsolved

a promenade
for the autocratic world
felonies are remote controlled

gold brought in by
a bunch of mercenaries
chains and brooches and rings and bars

skyscrapers and
trendy restaurants and a
pleasant hideaway out of the

eyes of the world
drugs, parts of mass destruction
weapons huckstered in free-trade zones

one hand washes
the other and he who knows
the chiefs can make all things happen

politics and
crime, two sides to the same coin
who asks too much ends up in jail

gets tortured, heads
kicked like soccer balls and smiles
extorted for propaganda films

so many hellholes in this world
underbelly of society
sordid side of life and growing
cancer of our civilisation

we're eager to forget about
we're trying to forget about
we prefer to ignore
we do choose to ignore

the ones who fight the hellholes

so many hellholes in this world
underbelly of society
sordid side of life and growing
cancer of our civilisation

we're eager to forget about
we're trying to forget about
we prefer to ignore
we do choose to ignore

the ones who fight the hellholes

homo homini lupus est

si vis pacem, para bellum
